Patent Attorney

Patent Attorney

A qualified IP professional authorised to advise on all aspects of the patent system and represent clients before patent offices and certain tribunals.

In the UK, the regulator responsible for authorising patent attorneys is the Intellecual Property Regulation Board (IPReg). IPReg maintains a register of attorneys who are suitably qualified and have been authorised to act as a patent attorney in the UK. In the UK, patent attorneys are required to hold both technical and legal qualifiications.

The titles of "Patent Attorney" or "Patent Agent" are legally protected in the UK. By contrast, other titles, such as "IP Consultant" or "IP Strategist", are not legally restricted and generally require no specific level of qualification nor are subject to regulatory oversight.
