About
Bitwise IP was founded with a clear goal: to bring expert patent counsel to the digital businesses that need it most - UK-based entrepreneurs, start-ups and SMEs.

I am Alexander Barnes (feel free to call me Alex), founder of Bitwise IP. I am a Chartered UK & European Patent Attorney and Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Patent Attorneys (CIPA) with over 15 years' experience in the patent profession.
As a specialist in digital technologies, I have experience protecting inventions relating to computer hardware, software, artificial intelligence & machine learning (AI/ML), cybersecurity, networking, autonomous systems such as robotics & drones, the Internet of Things (IoT) and smart devices.

With experience of working in both top-tier private practice and in-house roles, I combine a deep understanding of digital technology, specialist legal expertise in patent law and commercial acumen to help my clients use the patent system strategically to meet their business objectives.

In-House Experience

Prior to launching Bitwise IP, I spent over 6 years as an in-house patent attorney at BT. Whilst at BT, I managed a substantial portion of approximately 12% of the company's patent portfolio. I was also the lead attorney responsible for providing patent support to a number of BT's research groups, including their Future Cyber Defence, Future Smart Technologies and Big Data Insights & Analytics teams.

During my time at BT, I handled inventions in a wide range of digital technologies, including: computer and network security, network fault detection, network routing, Quality of Service (QoS) mechanisms, network transmission technologies such as G.Fast and optical transmitters, fraud prevention, artificial intelligence and machine learning (AI/ML), blockchain, digital twins, Internet of Things (IoT), drones, and spatial computing (i.e. virtual and augmented reality (VR/AR).

Top-Tier Private Practice Experience

Before joining BT, I spent over 7 years working in private practice, training in the High-Tech group of a well-regarded top-tier patent firm. During that time, I advised technology companies of all sizes, from start-ups to well-known multi-national corporations on protecting their inventions and managing their patent portfolios in fields such as digital rights management, white-box cryptography, content watermarking, computer and network security, satellite navigation, search technologies, computer games, solid state storage, cloud computing, computer processors and mobile communications.

Early Engineering Career & Education

Earlier in my career, I also held several technical engineering roles in software development, cybersecurity, and electromechanical control systems at various high-profile institutions operating in the financial and defence sectors - including as a Cyber Scientist at the Defence Science and Technology Laboratory (Dstl) at Porton Down and as a Technical Analyst (Software Developer) at Morgan Stanley.

I hold a first-class Master's degree (MEng) in Electronic Engineering with Computer Systems Engineering from the University of Warwick, where I studied topics such as digital electronics, computer systems, high-integrity systems, intelligent systems, automation, robotics, and biomedical engineering.
The Bitwise Origin Story

My interest in digital technologies was sparked at a young age through my fascination with chess. I was introduced to chess through the Battle Chess program on my family's first computer - an i386 that ran MS-DOS and required programs to be individually loaded from 5.25" floppy disks - a machine that captured my imagination. This introduction to chess led to a successful junior chess career, winning various national and regional titles and being selected for the national team - and no doubt was also useful for developing my strategic thinking. However, it was the arrival of IBM's Deep Blue supercomputer, which famously defeated the then world champion Garry Kasparov, that really piqued my interest in computers and intelligent systems. This interest drove me to learn to program and to explore and understand the inner workings of the computer systems and the digital electronics upon which they are built.

That same curiosity persists to this day and I thoroughly enjoy working with innovations and innovators at the forefront of digital technology, especially those relating to software, AI/ML, cybersecurity and autonomous systems. I decided to name my firm Bitwise IP to reflect this underlying technical interest and specialism.

I help clients across the UK to navigate the patent system and protect their digital innovations. Being based in the Cotswolds, I am well-placed to meet regularly in-person with those located in the nearby technology hubs of Cheltenham, Oxford and Swindon, but can meet virtually with those further afield, or where this is preferred.
